PLAY WITH COLOUR FOR AUTUMN 2016
With Summer fast becoming a distant memory and Autumn now upon us, we’ll be bringing to you a round up of some of the key trends we’re excited about here in the Sarah Jane Nielsen design studio.
Recently back from a visit to the leading London interiors exhibition Decorex, Sarah – who’s part Danish – was delighted to note that the Scandi-influence is very much on trend this season and in particular with some of the typically Scandinavian colour palettes being shown by suppliers.
Here, we run you through how you can play with colour to inject energy into a muted neutral palette.
Shades of Grey and Blue
Nordic shades of greys and blues, so popular in Scandi-schemes, were very much in evidence at Decorex – and though often viewed as ‘cool’ colours, can easily, and often cost-effectively, be ‘warmed up’ in a room scheme.
Top Tip: Combine cleverly with accent shades or use with metallic tones such a rose gold.

Neutral greys get an instant lift with the simple addition of a red throw in this conservatory.
Strong accent shades help to bring this season’s colour palette to life. We love this brilliant tomato red sofa (pictured) to brighten up Autumnal schemes but the vibrancy of the shade can work just as successfully in smaller pieces; a cushion, a throw or a simple brightly-coloured accessory can work magic. A splash of colour on warm velvet is the ultimate indulgence and works a treat in this vibrant sofa, but can also be effective used as plains in cushions, one-off chairs and paint shades.
Top tip: A vase full of Autumnal berries will add a vivid splash of colour to brighten up the darker skies outside.

If red isn’t to your taste, rich leaf tones of rusts, gingers, coppers and warm spice are also great for adding contrast to soft greys and anthracite background shades.
Tip: Add interest to traditional Autumn shades by opting for textural details and metallic finishes.
