Cragwood Country House

Having worked with the Lake District Country Hotels Group a number of times, we were delighted when we were asked to refurbish Cragwood Country House. Our brief was to redesign the communal areas and some bedrooms; the schemes were to be timeless, sympathetic to the building and celebratory of the arts and crafts movement.

This original arts and crafts house is a hidden treasure, tucked away from view inland, and yet from the lake, the properties spectacular exterior is something to behold.

Inside the house, there were many traditional, detailed features that we looked forward to enhancing in our schemes. The hall has beautiful carved, wood panel walls and fire surround. Here we chose a vibrant scheme; this would complement the grand, light space and prevent the wood panelling from dominating the room.

We introduced a yellow velvet sofa alongside forest green and orange velvet armchairs; all sat upon a green, rust and grey rug. The injection of colour works brilliantly in this space, demonstating a unity of new and old. Respectful of the arts and crafts era, we have complemented the colourful furniture with a mix of stained glass light features and side lamps.

To contrast, in the lounge we designed a much softer palette of neutrals, pinks, champagne and mauve. This sophisticated, feminine space was designed to offer guests calm and tranquillity. The large, hand-designed rug is illuminated by the natural light from the grand stone windows, while the gold and mink-pink velvet chairs bring out the subtle colours in the rug's design.

The bedrooms were to be individually designed and exclusive, each with a unique charm and character. The most luxurious, the bridal suite, includes a dominant four poster bed and panelled wall. To lighten and modernise the space, we painted the wood a light grey to match the intricately detailed grey wallpaper. We also introduced neutral soft furnishings with a hint of lilac and brown. Both are enhanced by the brown glass side lamps which are the perfect reminder of the properties arts and crafts heritage.
