How our suppliers add unique authenticity to our interiors

Here at Nielsen House, we are very lucky to be located in the stunning landscape of the Lake District National Park. We are surrounded by calming natural beauty which is such an inspiration to us and has been for many artists and writers for centuries.

So many of our clients see the area as a relaxing retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Consequently, they love how our signature style brings the outside in, celebrating the natural colours, fabrics, and tranquility of our environment.

To truly reflect the calming natural environment in our designs we must first consider the origins of our chosen materials. For authenticity, we research the journey of chosen products and only partner with ethical suppliers and artists. We believe a space with a story is always much richer than one without, so we seek unique pieces with a story to tell.

For many of our projects our soft furnishings are bespoke, each designed and manufactured locally. We recently commissioned the design and production of a range of sophisticated, comforting woolen throws each handmade in the nearby market town of Sedbergh. They will be perfect for dressing our Derbyshire made, Nielsen House Great Gable, Fairfield, and Potter Chairs, as well as our Edinburgh made Ottomans (all available to purchase from our shop).

Another local commission was for our interior project at the stunning Cragwood Country House Hotel. In keeping with the hotel’s arts and crafts roots, we co-designed a recycled glass coffee table, the stunning piece has a beautiful bottle-green glass top and burnished copper legs. We wanted a unique table that would catch the sunlight beautifully and we were absolutely delighted with the finished result! (see picture above).

We frequently incorporate locally made accessories to our schemes, they add charm, style, and can be a fabulous talking point. Over the years we have built a wonderful relationship with a local potter who creates beautifully artistic smoke fired, burnished ceramic pots and vases. We commission these vessels to complement our interiors, they add depth and accentuate our chosen natural colour palette.

Another locally made accessory frequently commissioned for our signature style projects is a collection of handcrafted, organic edged, wooden sculptures and bowls. These beautiful pieces are created from Elm Burr, Sycamore, Cherry, Laburnum, and Silver Birch. The wood is sourced from local tree surgeons who only fell the trees for environmental or safety reasons. We think every piece retains the original tree’s spirit and character, they create an atmosphere and make for a stunning table centerpiece.
