The Interior Design way forward for Nielsen House in 2023
As we look excitedly into a new year of projects and design exploration, we at Nielsen House have found ourselves adjusting to the shift that is most definitely afoot within our interior design and property industry.

This year see’s us working with some of our returning clients on new projects. They provide us with a familiar expectation of service and quality, helping to keep us at the forefront of our design service. Our clients are looking for more from us, their home, and their surroundings. The spaces we design should align with the lifestyle they are now focusing on, ease of use, mental and physical wellbeing along with the wellbeing of the planet.
We understand the need to consider our client’s values within the designs we create. It is no longer purely comfort, beauty of space and practicality; there is a strong focus on core ethics and beliefs. Something which we are also developing further within our company, our service, and our workplace. For an interior design studio, the philosophy and practise, is to go above and beyond expectations on the depth of our service and quality of finishing for our clients with limited impact to our surroundings. We are also seeking more from our suppliers looking for sustainably sourced materials, recycled materials and locally made where possible.

Nature and the great outdoors is at the forefront of our design. We have been embracing biophilic design for some time by bringing the natural environment inside through decoration, natural products, and finishing. Locality and connection with our environment can be pulled into the designed space through materials, textures and colours. We have even had local photographs turned into large scale digital images to apply to walls. This combination gives us the calming, tactile and sensory journey we are aiming for.
Our concerns towards climate change push us to continue to maximise the use of sustainable materials and fabrics. Even reviewing our clients existing furniture to see where we can keep and re-upholster items, to save the need for more to be created and purchased. A huge part of our signature design is creating a timeless look which ignores trends and design fads. Keeping our combination of layering tactile fabrics and finishes to subtle and sophisticated palettes which do not age. Creating warmth and a feeling of wellbeing and comfort that will last as long as the products themselves.
The joy of working where we do, within the Lake District National Park our use of colour connects with the local landscape. Natural palettes layered with depths of colour and tones seen from our windows which emit positive emotions and a sense of place.

Lighting plays such a large part on how a final design appears and feels. So naturally we give this element of design a lot of attention. Firstly, we want to maximise natural light as much as possible to generate the ultimate feeling of wellbeing. Through considered window treatments, such as our signature sheer and creating open plan areas, we can let in as much light as possible.
We work to combine the architectural lighting, downlights, with loose decorative lighting to create varying scenes within a room. We find if done well this can make a truly enchanting space to retreat to in the evening. Advancements and reliance on technology is having an impact on our spaces. As this technology advances, we seek to push and improve our knowledge on how it affects our designs and the use of the spaces. Programmed lighting and management systems are common-place and ever evolving allowing many scenes to be created, an intimate dinner part, to deep cleaning everything is connected to create the right environment for the desk. Even connecting to the heating, the operation of window treatments and sound systems. The multi-sensory experience is part and parcel of the interior design package.

Twenty twenty-two has seen the completion of some luxury holiday rentals. We have found a new desire within our area, for dual purpose homes. These clients seek to create spaces in which they can retreat to but would also like to make a secondary income when they are not using it themselves. They seek the quality we known for, but also need the design and the products to be robust and to add value added to the investment. These values are sought from our commercial clients who own boutique hotels, wellness spas, bars, and restaurants. Investment in the level of finishing and luxury is a competitive consideration for guests and our clients.
Looking forward to the New Year we continue to strive and push our designs to deliver the best for our clients. We look to connect on a personal level, building trust to achieve what our clients are looking for.
With Best Wishes for a Healthy and Harmonious New Year
