Timeless luxury Interior Design continues to thrill at Gilpin, as featured in The Times

We are delighted that our interior Design showcase at the Gilpin Hotel and Lake House has been featured in The Times as one of the 100 best hotels in the UK 2025. This is another prestigious recognition for Gilpin that highlights the lasting impact of World Class Interior Design and Service.

Although this interior design project was completed several years ago, it has stood the test of time with integrity and continues to shout the “Gilpin” brand in abundance. The timeless elegance and WOW factor of the interiors continues to elevate the guest experience at this stunning luxury Lake District hotel.

The Gilpin Hotel, Spa Lodges and Suites, nestled in 21 acres of beautiful countryside near Windermere, is a perfect blend of traditional charm and modern luxury. As part of this project, our team at Nielsen House Interior Design had the privilege of delivering the spa lodges and spa suites designed by Sarah Jane Nielsen, two of the most sought-after accommodation types at the hotel. These serene retreats combine the natural beauty of the Lake District with worldly curated interiors that offer both comfort and indulgence.

Luxury Spa Lodges and Suites at the Gilpin Hotel

The spa lodges and spa suites at the Gilpin Hotel are a true testament to the art of luxury design. These suites were thoughtfully created to provide guests with a peaceful sanctuary where they can relax and unwind in ultimate private comfort. Each spa lodge below features personal cedarwood hot tubs with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, allowing guests to experience nature from the comfort of their own lodge.

The spa suites followed a few years later and are equally luxurious and spacious. Each featuring stand alone central baths, double showers and personal sauna. As part of the Gilpin vision, we are continually challenged to bring innovation into our design work through interior finishing. Each sourced material was to embrace not only sustainability, but also the spa atmosphere and be moisture durable from steam room through to lounge as the guest flowed from area to area wet from the shower or external hot tub.

We would always look as local as possible while sourcing our design schemes and products. Each suite at the Gilpin is proud to offer Pure Lakes, a local organic skincare brand.

The Hotel interior design blends contemporary and traditional elements, ensuring that every suite feels both luxurious and welcoming. These lodges and suites have become synonymous with relaxation, offering an ideal retreat for guests looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Dining at Gilpin Spice: A Feast for the Senses

In addition to our over 25 year relationship with designing the hotel rooms, lounges and restaurants alongside Christine Cunliffe, a highlight was the pulling together and delivering of the spice trail interior concept restaurant conceptualised by Barney: Gilpin Spice restaurant. Offering guests a unique and vibrant dining experience.

Inspired by the rich flavours of Southeast Asia, the restaurant combines seven eastern destination themes of bold colours and textures to create an energetic yet inviting atmosphere. The design complements the exciting, flavourful menu, offering an exceptional experience for guests who seek a blend of luxury dining and cultural exploration in the heart of the Lake District.

A Prestigious Review in The Times

We are incredibly proud of this project and excited that The Gilpin Hotel has earned continued high praise, including a feature in The Times as one of the 100 best hotels in the UK. This recognition highlights the exceptional design and unique guest experience at the hotel, reaffirming its status as one of the premier luxury hotels in the Lake District. Being recognized by The Times is a testament to the quality of both the design and the service offered by the hotel, proving that great design never goes out of style.

The Expertise Behind the Design: Nielsen House Interior Design

This timeless world class design would not have been possible without the incredible talent of the Nielsen House interior design team led by Sarah Jane Nielsen. You can see her early work at the Lake House below, where Christine and Sarah bonded.

It was important to seamlessly blend traditional and contemporary design elements within each scheme while developing the Gilpin brand into what it is today. Keeping the hotel’s history, family unit and setting at the forefront whilst creating relaxing spaces that feel both elegant and timeless. The result is a hotel that has remained a top choice for travellers seeking luxury, comfort, and style in the Lake District.

We are incredibly proud of our work on The Gilpin Hotel and are thrilled to see how it continues to stand the test of time, offering an unforgettable luxury experience that guests will remember long after they’ve checked out.
