Our stylish Norwegian clients, a family of four, approached us in early 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic. Introduced through our website, we connected over Zoom to discuss their dream: a Lakeland holiday home that blended warm hospitality with clean, Scandinavian interior design.

A Home Away From Home

Their vision was clear. They wanted a welcoming, comfortable space where their family could grow and create memories for years to come. We were tasked with creating an interior that felt simple yet rich in quality—something timeless and tailored to their lifestyle. This was just the first phase of our journey together, with future design developments already on the horizon.

Focused on Quality and Longevity

From the beginning, quality and durability were central to every decision. We carefully aligned the budget with those values and began working with trusted suppliers to bring their vision to life. Despite the distance, we maintained momentum by curating tactile samples and bundles of fabrics and finishes, shipping them to Norway to help communicate our concept remotely.

Design Challenges During a Global Crisis

With Easter 2020 as the target completion, we pressed ahead. However, as the pandemic deepened, supply chains collapsed almost overnight. Factories halted production. Delivery timelines evaporated. We worked tirelessly to maintain our client’s enthusiasm and trust, even as our partners across Europe struggled through the upheaval.

Embracing Natural Materials and Heritage Craft

At Nielsen House, we champion tried-and-tested producers of luxury furnishings and upholstery. We love working with solid natural oak from Scandinavia, the UK, and Europe, and our signature aesthetic includes textured weaves, herringbones, and natural fabrics from northern and Scottish mills. These choices aligned beautifully with the family’s minimalist, nature-inspired preferences.

Shared Design Values

Together, we made thoughtful design decisions without needing to say much. Simple wooden floors paired with soft woven rugs created a foundation of warmth. Open fires and flagstone flooring added rustic charm. Their request for minimalist window treatments made perfect sense, this home sits high in the Lake District, offering uninterrupted views of the fells and mountains. Privacy simply wasn’t a concern.

The Power of Lighting and Flow

Lighting played a vital role in shaping the mood. Simple pendant lights warmed the open dining area, while table and floor lamps created ambient, layered lighting throughout the space. The connection between interior and landscape remained central to the design, echoing the calm, understated beauty of the surroundings.

Art That Reflects the Landscape

We brought in artwork from Libby Edmondson and Fiona Clucas, artists whose work draws directly from the Lake District. Their pieces added vibrant colour and a personal connection to the local landscape, enriching a serene and sophisticated interior palette.

Patience Rewarded

Delays were inevitable. Travel plans shifted constantly. Despite the challenges, our clients remained patient, kind, and full of enthusiasm. When they were finally able to travel in August 2021, we unveiled their completed Lakeland home. Their response made every hurdle worth it:

“WE LOVE THE HOUSE!!!! And what you have done with it. It is truly WONDERFUL!”
