Sarah Jane Nielsen

Interior Design Advisor

My works sits at the intersection of architecture, interiors and property strategy.

For more than three decades, I have worked across private homes, boutique hospitality environments and investment properties. I help clients see the true potential of a property and the interior design decisions that will unlock it.

I began my career as a project designer with the London architectural practice Michael Lyell Associates, Knightsbridge, contributing to the restoration of diplomatic and governmental residences and buildings across London, Paris, Moscow and the Middle East. This experience developed a deep respect for architecture, historic buildings and the relationship between interior design and the integrity of a property.

Over the years, I have worked with private homeowners, investors and hospitality operators on projects that require thoughtful design judgement and careful attention to the character of a property.

My Design Approach

The interiors I am most drawn to share certain qualities. They feel calm, balanced and considered. I care deeply about proportion, restraint and atmosphere.

Rather than imposing a style on a property, I believe in understanding its character and shaping an interior that feels natural to it.

Clients often tell me they are drawn to my work because it combines design clarity with a sense of quiet elegance. My aim is always to create interiors that feel timeless, personal and deeply comfortable to live in.

How I Think About a Property

When I first look at a property, I am not thinking about decoration or finishes. I am thinking about the structure of the space, how it works, how it feels and what it could become.

I look closely at how rooms connect, how natural light moves through the day, whether proportions feel balanced and how the architecture supports everyday life. Often, the most valuable design changes are not dramatic.

They are thoughtful adjustments that allow the architecture and the interior to work together more naturally.

Design Clarity

For more than two decades, I have worked inside complex residential projects, helping clients understand what will truly unlock the potential of a space.

Not just aesthetically, but structurally, emotionally and commercially. Often, the most dramatic decisions are not the architectural moves, they are quieter, more strategic shifts.

  • how a room connects to light
  • how circulation flows through the house
  • where proportion needs correcting
  • where complexity needs simplifying

Small moments of clarity can completely transform how a home is experienced.

This Is Where My Work Begins

Every project has a logic. Sometimes it’s clear, sometimes it’s hidden behind years of incremental decisions. My role is to reveal that logic.

To see the property clearly, often for the first time, and identify the decision that will create a home that feels effortless, coherent and valuable. This work forms the foundations of my consultancy.

When Clients Usually Call Me

Clients usually come to me when they sense a property has potential, but the way forward is not yet clear.
Typical situations include:

  • considering whether to purchase a property with renovation potential
  • planning changes to a home but wanting to avoid costly mistakes
  • feeling that a property should work better than it currently does
  • preparing a home for sale and wanting to strengthen its appeal
  • developing a boutique hospitality project
  • seeking experienced interior design judgement before committing to major decisions

Often, the property already contains the right ingredients.
It simply needs clearer design thinking to reveal what it could become.

INTERIOR STYLIST, OUTSIDE INFLUENCES!

Sarah’s journey and that of Nielsen House is heavily inspired by the natural environments she finds herself in, both in the Lake District in the UK and in Santa Maria del Cami in Mallorca. She is never far from a camera and takes pride in continually sensing and capturing the beauty, splendour and uniqueness of her environment, be it in the city streets of Palma Old Town, on the side of Scafell Pike in the Lakes, or on a lazy Sunday with her two daughters, Beth and Emilia, and her wonderful husband Roger.

Beginning life as a fine artist and printmaker, Sarah’s personal expression bled into the architectural and interior design worlds very early on, through applications of texture, form, colour and pattern. Depth and richness brought about by an intense eye for detail and personality-tailored design solutions quickly won Sarah a following, as well as large projects for the Gilpin Hotel and Lake House, which you can see detailed here.

Sarah says “Every one of my designs stem from nature. My design-eye is always on, and I constantly aim is to make the most of every possible influence to bring depth and uniqueness to my work. I strive to be the best in my field and exceed expectations, every time.”

Whilst Sarah has had the privilege of working closely with world leaders, heads of state, princes, princesses and their families throughout the Middle East, London, Paris, Moscow, Africa and the USA, each of her clients come to her for the same thing, no matter who they are – their desire to make their home uniquely and unmistakably their own.
