High Wray Bank: A masterpiece of bespoke interior design

Transforming a historic Lakeland villa

We were approached through recommendation by an elegant and expectant couple with the vision to thoughtfully renovate, enhance, and re-present this once-majestic 5-bedroom Lakeland villa on the shores of Windermere. The new owners eagerly anticipated spending time in their home away from home in the English Lake District. The brief was succinct: they wanted a 5-star contemporary interior yet classically traditional home and guest house, fit to enjoy with discerning friends and their much-adored cocker spaniels. The property needed to be finished to an exceptionally high standard with all modern luxuries while maintaining an element of discretion. A tasteful, stylish, and personalised second home with bespoke luxury Interior design offering comfort for years to come.

The home was to incorporate sensory demands, including a high-tech sound, lighting, and management system. Features like window blinds would protect the interiors from the sun and add privacy and a sense of well-being, while a carefully curated lighting scheme would blend elegant decorative lighting with architectural and task lighting, preserving the house’s existing characteristics with selective enhancements.

A blend of tradition and modernity

As is often the case, the project grew in scope as discussions evolved around how the couple envisioned living in their Lake District home. It was decided that a state-of-the-art kitchen, lounge, and dining extension, offering a more relaxed and practical living space, would complement the formal turn-of-the-century layout of the original property.

This vision embraced the stunning Lake District location by opening the internal living spaces to the terraced exterior, using expansive glass doors and windows that overlook Windermere and the surrounding peaks. Given the Lake District National Park restrictions, all new designs had to enhance and harmonise with the property’s historical character.

The result was a multi-use interior that balanced simplicity and casual living with the home’s ornate period features. A striking finca interior design touch was added through the use of a local Lakeland stone internal wall, dividing the contemporary living space from the more traditional parts of the house. Externally, the extended terrace flows seamlessly over a semi-subterranean pool, complete with a changing room, sauna, steam room, and gym overlooking the lake—a discreet yet stunning addition to the landscape.

Connecting these spaces was a unique underground corridor leading to the leisure area. Leaving the formality of the main house, with its polished Versailles oak panelled flooring and crystal chandeliers, the staircase takes you down to this unexpected yet luxurious area. The corridor, far from ordinary, features a handsome Lakeland stone wine cellar with natural oak accents and playful vinyl wall murals. This eclectic space is further enhanced by bronze antiqued mirror panels and a designer metal console table.

Restoring and enhancing with care

Our interior design approach was guided by the villa’s historical features. We believe every property reveals its story, and it’s crucial for new owners to respect that narrative while adding their own personal touch. Initially, the villa appeared to be in good order, but deeper inspection revealed extensive dry rot. Every timber detail had to be replaced and reinstated to preserve the structure’s integrity.

This challenge led to a comprehensive redesign and rebuild. Every joinery element, from doors and architraves to skirting and dado rails, was meticulously recreated. Lath and plaster ceilings with ornate details were removed and remade. The unassuming original staircase was replaced with a custom helical staircase, a standout feature that looked as though it had always belonged.

A bespoke stained-glass window at the head of the stairs adds a personal touch, depicting the hidden view of the boathouse nestled on the lakeshore, infusing the home with a unique story.

Inside/outside harmony – embracing the Lake District landscape

This villa’s commanding position overlooking Windermere and the surrounding fells lends it a status of quiet elegance. The restoration preserved the villa’s classical features, from its raised eyebrow windows to its slate sills and white render. The view from within, framed by comfortable window seats, offers ever-changing skyscapes, enjoyed from the warmth and luxury of the villa’s interior.

The soft colour palette and contemporary simplicity highlight the period detailing, while the polished oak flooring adds understated warmth. A carefully designed lighting scheme provides an ambient glow, illuminating the grandeur of crystal chandeliers and making the villa sparkle even on grey Lakeland days.

Local Artisans are the heart of our craftsmanship

Our design vision was made possible by the exceptional skills of local artisans. Cabinet makers, joiners, and plasterers were crucial in recreating the villa’s historical charm. We take pride in developing strong relationships with these craftspeople, whose dedication ensures each project’s success. From bespoke upholstery to window treatments, every piece is as practical as it is beautiful.

Artisan trades are becoming scarce, but we remain committed to nurturing local talent, encouraging the younger generation to embrace craftsmanship and pride in their work. This dedication ensures our projects continue to shine, year after year.

International recognition: A project worthy of acclaim

We are proud to announce that this project has been shortlisted for the International Architecture and Design Awards 2025, a testament to the hard work, creativity, and craftsmanship that brought this Lakeland villa back to life.
