Lakeland Basecamp

The postcard-perfect Lake District home. We set out to create a Lakeland-inspired scheme topped with a hint of Scandinavian style. The owner, a travelling professional, wanted the home to be a dreamy retreat. It was important that the space omitted tranquillity and calm, be reflective of the surrounding landscape and sympathetic to the property’s heritage.

In preparation for our interior works, JCA architects did a superb job of restoring this small but perfectly formed home. There was no end to their impeccable attention to detail, which included lifting and then reinstating the original flagstones once underfloor heating was in place.

The property had a classic cottage feel to it, the comforting thick stone walls called for a neutral palette, contrasting well with the natural tones of the slate flagstones and windowsills. Whitewash walls opened up the space and provided the perfect backdrop for local artist Libby Edmondson's Auburn works, depicting dramatic Lakeland landscapes.

We installed a stainless steel island and induction hob for a real chef-style kitchen. The exposed metal contrasted well with the natural stone floors and, when combined with the sizeable, robust oak kitchen table and matching benches, felt very organic.

To retain historical authenticity, we commissioned replicas of the traditional internal doors right down to the handmade cast iron latches.

During the restoration, we were fortunate to come across floorboards with local newspaper clippings dating back to the early 1800s fused to the wood. Beautiful in its existing form, we had the planks mounted and framed in the kitchen. Additionally, we framed the out of use tea cupboard door; we felt that this beautifully aesthetic piece symbolised the building's history and thus deserved admiration for years to come.

As is typical with traditional Lake District cottages, the windows were quite small so, to ensure the home had optimum light and made the most of the spectacular views, a glass pavilion was added with access to the garden and patio. This space successfully brought the outside in, creating the desired sense of freedom and calm.
